Rivermead

Rivermead Park is located on the banks of the River Thames, adjacent to the Waterfront Café and close to the toucan crossing.

We launched the Rivermead regeneration project following the deterioration of the paddling pool, which ultimately became impossible to maintain and, regrettably, could no longer remain in use. The project was also inspired by an opportunity to unlock the full potential of this attractive riverside setting. Views of the Thames were partially obscured by the old concrete shelter, and many residents expressed a wish for improved access to the river.

A central element of the project is the replacement of the paddling pool with a modern facility that reflects the desires of parishioners communicated during public consultation. However, changes to legislation and standards governing water management and usage since the original pool was constructed in the 1950s have made this aspect of the project particularly complex. The working group remains committed to providing a replacement that is practical and cost-effective.

The remainder of the site will be enhanced with amenity grassland, refurbished pathways, additional benches and upgraded seating areas. We also plan to improve access to the river for canoe, kayak and paddleboard users.

The schematic illustration provides an indication of the current proposals, although the final design will be influenced by ongoing discussions with key stakeholders, including the Environment Agency and National Trails, as the Thames Path passes directly through the site. As the project develops, we will continue to consult with residents and provide further opportunities for feedback and comment.

Ultimately our aim is to create an area which makes better use of this important riverside setting.
